What do you mean perhaps? They did accomplish their goal. Americans are now more willing than ever to surrender their rights under the umbrella of "Well, if you've got nothing to hide then...." reason.

Our civil rights died with the Patriot Act. And we can't even blame the terrorists: we did it to ourselves.

Those who are willing to sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither.

Silly me, I thought their goal was to kill a bunch of us and scare the rest. I really doubt our civil liberties crossed their minds.

We've reached the limits of what rectal probing can teach us.

TSA now wants to fingerprint private pilots of small aircraft and they want more regulations over who is traveling in and out of small & privately owned air parks.

While parts of the Patriot Act bug the crap out of me, as a private, single engine pilot, I have absolutely no problem with this new decision. I don't know why they didn't do it sooner.

I have voted republican 95% of the time (5% was for the first term of Clinton, boy that was a mistake) but even I have problems with a lot of the privacy rights we have lost since 9-11. Problem is you have repubs with these invasive laws, then you get dems increasing the role and size of government and neither is good esp. when they mix.

The only issue I see with a policy like this is that it's a typical, reactionary action to a past event. I'm no expert on terrorism, but I'm guessing that the next attack will be yet another tactic that we haven't planned for, just like 9/11 was something that nobody had ever expected. Precautions like this should have been in place initially -- implementing it now is no more than a false sense of security, IMO.

It will actually cause a burden on airports depending on how many private pilots use such airport. Also, I hate the TSA being charged with anything. I swear they get more stupid by the day.

Who is going to be checking these fingerprints? Are they going to have be printed every time they take off and land? Otherwise, I really don't get the point. And if so, the paperwork and plain old WORK involved in that sounds like too much for an already overburdened economy.

Disneymom3 will add an Amen to that as well. Right now, in some areas the rights of homeschoolers are under big time attack. I have warned my friends with kids in private school that they are next on the totem pole. They already have too much control in many areas of public school kids--i.e. restrictions on family vacations etc. I am a firm believer in the slippery slope when it comes to infringement on our rights.

ITA! However, we the people have allowed Congress to become a reactionary body. The Patriot Act was a first step. The current wave of law passing is just reaping what we sowed. Everything is an emergency and there is no longer anytime to stop, think and consider what the consequences of these actions might bring.

I'm totally down with the slippery slope argument.

I also find it interesting that people from completely varying positions on the political spectrum can agree that our freedoms are being limited, and that that's a bad thing.

Seriously, even in the schools our parents and grandparents had way more leeway than children today.

ITA, it's a shame with so many intelligent people and resources that we cannot be more proactive than reactive. Then again, it makes some people feel like everything is under control-- so I guess that makes it all worth it.

Too bad Tom Clancy wasn't involved with our national security before 9-11 (and that those who were didn't read his novels) He pretty much nailed it in "Debt of Honor"

Patriot Act + over reaching gov't= bad news for the US Don't forget we, the citizens did not vote for the Patriot Act it was the idiots in Washington. If they had to impress Podunk, USA, they should have at least limited the time the PA would be in effect.
