Posts: 594 Mar 21 09 9:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I have a question for those of you who've shopped both Trader Joe's and Aldi's; since they are owned by the same parent company, is Aldi's food the same as the stuff sold at TJ's? A lot of TJ's food is private label, since Aldi's is private label, I wonder if they are buying from the same vendor. There are a lot of foods that TJ's stopped selling; I am hoping that Aldi's may now sell it. Why I am asking is my ex-MIL told me that an Aldi's openned in her hometown last month; I am going to her house in a few weeks and think perhaps I may build in some time to shop there. I don't want to get my hopes up if the food is nothing like TJ's.

Posts: 210 Mar 21 09 9:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There are actually two ALDI companies, each owned by an Albrecht brother. The one who doesn't own the American ALDI owns Trader Joe's. ALDI in America is very different from ALDI in Germany; they carry far more processed food in America, and don't have the wide variety of products. I really like ALDI in Germany but I don't like it in America; but I also find that it varies widely from state to state. And I like ALDI south/Hofer, not so much ALDI North in Germany. (confused?) Trader Joe however carries many products from Europe as their own house brand. I recognize many of the products I buy in Germany and France at Trader Joe's. I also buy my favourite cheeses there. The Albrechts are the richest Germans and amongst the top ten richest people in the world.

Milk at ALDI is 2 dollars less a gallon than at the regular grocery store. Luckily for me, the ALDI is not even a block away from my usual grocery store. I buy my staples there and then hit the regular store for the rest of my stuff.

Debbi, I think that ALDI started off like that - staples. Now they are actually in Germany the biggest seller of - computers! They don't carry all products, and the stores are small like in America. I really don't like some of their brands in Germany, like the coffees they carry. And they only sometimes carry good chocolate. But I do like the staples that they sell. I use ALDI to sort of round out my shopping. My family has shopped at the Albrecht stores from back when they had one family run shop. Germany wasn't just divided into East/West - there is also the 'ALDI line' which seperates north and south. The stores and product lines are very different depending to which brother they belong. Another interesting (well, to me) tidbit - the two brothers are extremely reclusive since the 1970's. One was kidnapped for 17 days and paid a huge ransom. They had a split but it is thought not to be as bitter as the other famous German brother feud - the Puma and Adidas brother. They never reconciled before death and their home village was split over loyalties.

I miss the mango sauce, the Baja lime marinade, green chili sauce, the tarter sauce with jalapeno's and a few other things. I do wonder if these items are at other TJ's; but are now distributed regionally. The 2 2 TJ's around here sell a lot of Thai and Indian foods and very little of any other ethnic food.

The only Aldi I've ever been to is in France and it was expensive so we didn't buy much. TJ's I shop at all the time, and we have some of the things you're missing I get lots of French stuff there for DH, it makes him happy. I'm not always a bitch, I'm just really tired of stupid people!

As Cranky German (who I think is from a specific region, btw ) mentioned, they stock the stores with a ton of processed foods. This week, they've got butter for 1.50 a pound-I need to make my way over and grab some for the freezer.

Posts: 5889 Mar 22 09 1:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I miss Aldi's! I shopped there every week before we moved. They don't have everything, but they do have good prices on basic stuff. And they do have some specialty stuff, like sauces and frozen strudel and stollen and stuff. Not to mention great chocolate! I have never been to a Trader Joe's, so I can't compare the two. I will point out, though, that Aldi's only takes cash or debit card. So, have either handy if you're going to stop in. Also, they charge for grocery bags, so I always brought my own. They're $0.10 each to buy. You can also use the leftover boxes for your stuff. BTW, cranky german--my uber-crunchy lotus-birthing brother is also living in your region of Germany. My niece was born at the Starnberg Hopsital. I mention it only because he is the one person that I know in Germany.
